Floating Docks Manufactured and Installed on Massachusetts River
Tucked on the south bank of the Merrimack River, four miles inland from the Atlantic Ocean, sits Merri-Mar Yacht Basin Inc., in historic Newburyport, MA. Proudly started by a World War II Navy veteran, the marina is in its third generation of family ownership, and the marina shows its pride. The full-service marina offers seasonal moorings and dockage, as well as transient moorings and transient dockage, free parking, free wi-fi, and showers. They also have a Ships Store and Parts Department, stocking parts for engine and generator lines, and a Marine Repair & Service Department catering to both sail- and power-boats.
Over the years, the wooden floating docks took a beating from the tough Massachusetts elements and hauling the docks out of the water late each fall due to ice floes on the river.
Management wanted to replace the docks with something aesthetically appealing and more functional. After seeing BoardSafe’s quality of work and products at other marinas, they decided to engage BoardSafe for the manufacture and installation of their docks. In conversations with BoardSafe, they decided to use Ipe decking with TimberStrong internal panel fasteners and an aluminum frame. Special engineering was needed to set the proper floatation as well as create a design that worked with the existing pilings. The Merrimack River fluctuates six feet with the tides, and internal mounts were built into the aluminum floating docks.
A total of 7,000 square feet of dock space was installed and unveiled in the spring of 2017.
