Whether you’re a first-timer paddler or one who is seasoned, the Venture Outdoors Paddle Center by BoardSafe Docks of Fleetwood, PA, is open and ready for some summer paddling fun. Venture Outdoors' new concession hub is located just outside the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in downtown Pittsburgh.

Venture Outdoors Paddle Center offers water access for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, fishing, and other outdoor educational experiences. Renters can reserve sit-in or sit-on-top, single or tandem kayaks, as well as stand-up paddleboards. The launch provides a “smooth like butter” entry into the Allegheny River, stated Andrews, who demonstrated the launch and spoke about the mission and vision for the new facility. The paddle center’s main focus is on having three accessible kayak launches, plus one launch with additional adaptive features specifically to accommodate paddlers in wheelchairs. The fourth launch is equipped with a boarding bench that is equal to the height of a wheelchair, an overhead grab bar, a step-down bench with a pull-out seat, grab straps and pull bars, and a stable cradle that eliminates the fear of tipping when entering and exiting the vessel.
During the interview, Andrews shared that this is only Phase 1 of the project and stated that Phase II will be completed sometime next year, after some additional fundraising.
Those who are willing to support Phase II of their venture are encouraged to donate through their Adopt-A-Kayak Program. The city is supporting great things happening on its rivers with hopes of drawing more visitors to its waterfront. Phase II includes replacing the temporary structures on the dock with an aluminum-welded floating boathouse that will provide better safety to employees and allow them to house the organization's kayaks and stand-up paddleboards.
The new building will allow Venture Outdoors to increase their recreational offerings and allow for more educational programs right on the water. Donations and support will help them do even greater things and continue to break down barriers to nature in downtown Pittsburgh.

Verona Borough Improves River Access with BoardSafe Adaptive Kayak Launch
Steel City Rowing, Friends of the Riverfront, and Verona Borough in PA just celebrated the launch of something big—Verona’s brand-new BoardSafe Adaptive Kayak Launch. The riverfront party and ribbon-cutting ceremony were packed with activities to mark this exciting milestone, kick off the summer, and get things rolling on the river!
The project is a partnership among Friends of the Riverfront, Steel City Rowing Club, and Verona Borough, helping to realize the Friends' Water Trail Management Plan. This project improves access and water recreation on Pittsburgh's three rivers.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony and activities included a guided paddle with Allegheny Land Trust, Yoga by the Water with Be Yoga Oakmont, a Fishing Demonstration with Venture Outdoors, and Food Trucks with Kona Ice and Sharks Grill 412.
The accessible kayak launch was designed, engineered, and manufactured by BoardSafe Docks of Fleetwood, PA. The launch with adaptive features provides universal access to all, and is a valuable addition to the Three Rivers Water Trail, providing river access and enjoyment for everyone looking to get out and paddle the river.
Jenn Langzettel, the Executive Director of Steel City Rowing, said the ADA-accessible launch was an exciting addition to local water recreation. “Steel City Rowing Club is very happy and honored to have been able to work with Friends of the Riverfront and Verona Borough to provide this wonderful resource to the community,” Langzettel said. “Part of our mission here at SCRC is to provide access to the river for all, and this kayak launch will now allow for many individuals who previously have not had the opportunity to comfortably access our beautiful stretch of the Allegheny River,” she added.
Kelsey Ripper, executive director of Friends of the Riverfront, said that expanding the number of ADA-accessible launches on the Three Rivers Water Trail was part of the organization’s longer-term plan. “This launch is another step in Friends’ pursuit of making our trails accessible to all,” Ripper said. “Our region’s beautiful rivers and trails are precious assets, and we hear all the time how much it means to people to be able to use them freely.”
The Verona Accessible Kayak Launch was financed in part by a grant from the Community Conservation Partnerships Program Environmental Stewardship Fund under the administration of the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of Recreation and Conservation, and the Richard King Mellon Foundation grant, both administered through the Pennsylvania Organization for Watersheds and Rivers–Ohio Basin Access for Canoes and Kayaks Grant Program and Statewide Watershed Access Grant Program.

BoardSafe & Venture Outdoors Launch Pittsburgh's Premier Paddle Center
BoardSafe Docks is proud to collaborate with Venture Outdoors of Pittsburgh, PA, on an exciting and innovative project: a one-of-a-kind paddle center along the Allegheny River in front of the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. After nearly two years of planning and collaboration, this state-of-the-art floating paddle and rental facility is poised to position Pittsburgh as a leader in urban paddlesports access.
The new paddle center will serve as a downtown hub for kayaking, canoeing, and stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), providing residents and visitors near the convention center with easy access to Pittsburgh’s iconic Three Rivers. With over 75 kayaks and other non-motorized paddle crafts, the center will feature multiple launch areas—including one specifically designed for paddlers in wheelchairs who require additional adaptive features to access the water.
The floating docks will span an impressive 100 feet by 50 feet, creating a vibrant, functional space for recreation right in the heart of downtown Pittsburgh. According to VisitPittsburgh, the concession is expected to boost tourism, drawing both locals and visitors to the waterfront.
Phase One Launching Near Memorial Day
Phase one of the project is slated to open near Memorial Day, marking a major milestone in downtown Pittsburgh’s efforts to expand outdoor recreation opportunities. This launch will open access to nature, particularly for those who live, work, or visit downtown and may not have the time or transportation to venture outside the city to recreate.

The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) is excited to offer the next round of Boating Facility Grants to help communities capitalize on the surge in new boating activity.
A growing number of communities realize the positive social and economic impacts of having convenient boating access along their local waterways.
The Boating Facility Grant program provides grants for planning, acquisition, development, expansion, and rehabilitation of public boating facilities located on the waters of the Commonwealth. The PFBC encourages townships, boroughs, and municipal and county governments to apply. Nonprofit groups (501c3) including land trusts, conservancies, and watershed associations are also eligible to apply. Private businesses and service clubs are not eligible for direct funding but are encouraged to partner with their local county or municipality.
“Across Pennsylvania, momentum continues to grow around outdoor recreation as a whole, and the enthusiasm we’re seeing for recreational boating is incredible,” said Tim Schaeffer, PFBC Executive Director. “Participation in paddlesports, especially kayaking, has surged, and many communities are eager to accommodate families and individuals by adding or improving safe and convenient public access to the water. Funds awarded through this grant program can help communities develop projects, particularly projects that are accessible for all, to improve existing access areas or develop something new to serve local residents and attract recreational boaters to their communities.”
Applicants can seek grants for site acquisition, development, expansion, prevention of the spread of aquatic invasive species, and rehabilitation of recreational boat access facilities. Eligible construction projects may include, boat ramps, courtesy floats, restrooms, access roads, parking areas, and signs. Funds may also enhance the facility’s ADA compliance or add adaptive elements to the access site. Applicants are encouraged to keep accessibility for all in mind when developing their applications.
Funding requests require a 50% match. For the 2025 round of grants, the PFBC will accept applications from anywhere in the Commonwealth.
The deadline for applications is November 30, 2024.

BoardSafe Adaptive Kayak Launch Helps More People Access Lake Chillisquaque
The Middle Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association and Montour Area Recreation Commission collaboratively installed a new BoardSafe adaptive kayak launch at Montour Preserve's Lake Chillisquaque on Saturday, August 3, 2024.
The launch was made possible thanks to a grant from the Foundation for Pennsylvania Watersheds and funding from the Vernal School Environmental Education Partnership effort via the 1994 Charles B. Degenstein Foundation.
“Adaptive kayak launches allow people who may have physical limitations or emotional fears to access the lake by using a special chute and bench system that cradles a kayak or canoe and makes it much easier to get in and out,” said Middle Susquehanna Riverkeeper John Zaktansky. “This launch will allow people to engage with our resources in ways they couldn't before. To my knowledge, this is the only adaptive launch within an 80- to 90-mile radius of this area. We are excited to offer programs using this system to inspire more people to connect with our aquatic ecosystem.”

Monongahela River Wharf Offers Accessibility with BoardSafe Kayak Launch
Riverside Wharf Park, located in the small suburb of Brownsville and nestled along the Monongahela River, plays a key part in Brownsville’s community. The wharf is within walking distance from town and offers fishing, a public boat launch, and a relaxing place to read a book or watch activities on the water. Access to the waters of the Monongahela River was limited for many residents, especially those with physical disabilities before the borough’s partnership with BoardSafe Docks. Renowned for our commitment to accessibility, BoardSafe Docks of Fleetwood, PA, designed and manufactured Brownsville’s state-of-the-art adaptive kayak launch and accessible floating dock system. The dock now provides boating, paddling, and fishing access from Brownsville’s historic wharf. The dock fulfills a 10-year vision that Brownsville Borough had for providing accessible boating access to their wharf.
The Monongahela River played a significant role in Pittsburgh’s industrial and economic development, particularly during the “steel era.” As recent as 2013, “the Mon” was recognized as River of the Year for its scenic beauty, fishing spots, and boating opportunities. The river uniquely flows from south to north, and meets with the Allegheny River at its confluence to form the Ohio River in downtown Pittsburgh.
Brownsville’s new dock and kayak launch is more than just a piece of infrastructure—it symbolizes inclusivity and progress in the borough. Designed with various adaptive features, the kayak launch ensures that everyone, regardless of physical ability, can enjoy the freedom and joy of kayaking. The well-equipped site offers an ADA gangway that provides a gentle, easy pitch down to the water where people in wheelchairs can access the 100 feet of floating docks and the adaptive kayak launch. The accessible launch includes a stabilizing cradle for safe and easy access in and out of the kayak, an adaptive kit with a step-down bench, overhead grab bar, hand straps, and pull bars that make it easy for individuals to move from their wheelchair into their kayak.
Megan, a local resident who had been an avid kayaker before an accident left her with limited mobility, was one of the first to use the new kayak launch. As she paddled out onto the river for the first time in years, she felt a wave of emotions wash over her: freedom, empowerment, and a deep connection to nature. "It's incredible to be back on the water," she said with joy in her eyes. "This launch allows me to kayak again, and it’s something I really enjoy!"
BoardSafe expects the impact of the adaptive kayak launch to ripple through Brownsville just as it does in other communities. There is hope for schools and community groups to organize kayak outings, and for people of all ages and abilities to come together to enjoy paddling on the Monongahela. Scope of Work on the Monongahela River Wharf Project
The project included
- 100 feet of floating dock installed on the Monongahela River.
- a BoardSafe Clip-A-Launch and Adaptive Boarding Kit for kayakers with limited mobility.
- a 30-ft-long accessible gangway with a handrail.
- a 30-ft long support arm to temporarily support the dock until piles are installed.
BoardSafe fast-tracked the project timeline for the borough to have it installed in time for Brownsville’s RiverFest on July, 5th, 2024. BoardSafe’s expertise and experience with similar projects allowed us to design, draft, fabricate, and install the project in less than 3 weeks.
Key stakeholders involved in the project responsible for seeing it through to completion were Mike Walters of the Brownsville Borough and McMillen Engineering, who assisted with the DNR and Army Corps of Engineers permit applications. Kevin Jones and his remarkable team of installation experts from Blue Water Docks of Chattanooga, TN, installed the floating courtesy dock, gangway, and kayak launch.

BoardSafe Docks Recognized as Platinum Sponsor for SOBA's 2023 Symposium
BoardSafe Docks is thrilled to be among the largest group of professionals actively engaged in improving and expanding public boating access across the United States at the SOBA Annual Education & Training Symposium, happening now in Tacoma, Washington. The symposium attracts nearly 200 state program specialists, boating and marine-related manufacturers, engineers, materials specialty industries, contractors, educators, state and federal agencies, consulting firms, private and nonprofit companies, and other boating organizations.
As a forum for water and boating access resources, the four-day SOBA symposium is the place to be for boating access and outdoor recreation professionals and any organizations wishing to keep abreast of the latest materials, designs, and construction techniques.
This annual event is the largest gathering of professionals and affiliate organization representatives engaged in improving and expanding public boating access. This year’s lineup of dynamic speakers is sharing insights into work happening in motorized boating access and non-motorized inclusive river access throughout the United States. SOBA is an organization devoted to the acquisition, development, and administration of public recreational boating facilities nationwide.
BoardSafe Builds Connecting Pedestrian Bridge for Fleetwood Borough
Fleetwood Borough Park, located at 334 W. Main St., Fleetwood, PA, is the recipient of a recently installed BoardSafe pedestrian bridge. In 2020, the original bridge was swept away by a flooding storm that hit the area. The storm destroyed the park’s wooden pedestrian bridge, and flooding washed out the park. The park’s bandshell, already suffering from decay, was condemned when the creek caused additional damage from the storm.
“Borough Council was committed to replacing both the bridge and bandshell as they recognized how important these structures were to the Fleetwood residents and the activities that take place at the park,” said Borough Manager Chris Young. The old bridge provided walking access to the park from the residential neighborhood behind the park, and the new bridge restored the access that was lost.
Fleetwood Borough sought out and received generous grants from DCED (Department of Community and Economic Development) and DCNR (Department of Conservation and Natural Resources) to help fund the greatly needed project. Through the grant application process, they were able to receive $380,000 to subsidize the cost of the new bridge over the creek, repair the creek, address flood damage, and install a new bandshell.
Borough Council recognized how important these amenities are to its residents; therefore, they committed to repairing and maintaining the creek and the surrounding greenspace located in the heart and hub of their community. The park offers picnic facilities, a walking path with exercise stations, playground facilities, a bandshell, and a concession stand for concerts and other events. The pedestrian bridge was key to residents’ accessibility throughout the park and connects the park to the parking lot and nearby community.

Ribbon-cutting ceremony recognized project contributors
A ribbon-cutting ceremony took place on Sunday, June 4, before Parks and Recreation's first Sunday night Concert in the Park.
Those in attendance included Judy Schwank, PA State Senator, other state officials, Fleetwood borough leaders, and representatives from contracting companies involved in the project. Those involved in the improvement project received recognition for their efforts at the well-attended ceremony.
“The public opinion regarding improvements at the park is positive, especially for the new bridge. The bandshell had a temporary tent for the last two years that allowed for concerts to continue, and the community was happy to see a permanent structure back in place. The new pedestrian bridge is ADA-compliant, offers wheelchair accessibility, and has solar lighting which the old bridge didn’t provide,” said Young.

The new pedestrian bridge, designed and manufactured by Board Safe Docks, also of Fleetwood, was purchased through Pennsylvania’s cooperative purchasing program called COSTARS (Cooperative Sourcing to Achieve Reductions in Spending.) The COSTARS program leverages buying power with competitively priced contracts and an effective procurement process.
The bridge preparation work, foundations, bandshell stage, and construction contract was awarded through a competitive bid process to DESCCO Design & Construction, Inc., of Fleetwood. Flyway Excavating of Mount Joy completed the site work on the creek.

Fleetwood prepares for sesquicentennial: celebrating 150 years
The pedestrian bridge and park improvements were completed in time to celebrate the Borough of Fleetwood as it kicks off its 150th anniversary celebration. Numerous year-long celebratory events are planned to commemorate the borough. Fleetwood’s Council of Community Organizations (FCCO), a group composed of representatives from non-profit organizations, announced them here: 150th Anniversary – Borough of Fleetwood, PA. Events will include the Fleetwood Carnival, car shows, concerts and movies in the park, fireworks and parades, a time capsule presentation, and numerous holiday events.
Fleetwood’s history has deep roots
Fleetwood Historical Society goes a long way to preserve Fleetwood’s history. The society has a mission to “Preserve the Past for the Future.” The museum is a walk back in time to reminisce and a source to learn about historical contributions from the Fleetwood area. BoardSafe’s pedestrian bridge project profile
The pedestrian bridge project consisted of a 35-ft long x 6.8-ft wide elevated aluminum pedestrian walkway, a 30-ft. gangway, and a 24-ft. gangway with a landing and stairs. The new ADA-compliant gangway provides opportunities for people in wheelchairs to attend park functions without struggling through the barriers that existed in the past. The pedestrian bridge will provide inclusive access to the park for many years to come.

BoardSafe Docks Provides Paddling Accessibility for Allentown Waterfront
In October 2022, BoardSafe Docks completed the installation of a custom gangway, floating dock system, kayak launch, and storage racks on the Lehigh River in Allentown, PA. The Allentown Waterfront Project, developed by Jaindl Enterprises, is part of a redevelopment effort to revitalize an unused twenty-nine-acre industrial site, formerly home to Lehigh Structural Steel, into a vibrant mixed-use campus along the western banks of the Lehigh River.
The complex will revitalize the site’s industrial history and blend it with a beautiful new waterfront community. The design includes a mix of commercial and residential properties that will host restaurants, retail stores, and recreational amenities, and will offer convenient lifestyle and growth opportunities to the local economy.

The custom waterfront project developed by Jaindl Enterprises had a vision that included providing water access to paddlers wishing to paddle the Lehigh River. The shoreline approaching the Lehigh River is very steep and was inaccessible when the planning for the project began. BoardSafe Docks of Fleetwood, PA, was hired to design and manufacture a floating dock system and kayak launch that would open up accessibility to the beautiful riverfront for the new tenants.
A BoardSafe Kayak Launch provides safe and easy access and cannot be found anywhere else on the Lehigh River, making it an attractive feature for those living and working by the river.
Waterfront Project features
BoardSafe’s custom project along the Lehigh River includes a commercial floating aluminum dock, gangway, Clip-a-Launch, and kayak storage racks.

Due to the steep slope of the shoreline and possible flooding and drought conditions along the river, a concrete foundation was formed to secure the floating dock system to land. Heavy-duty engineered support arms were used to secure the dock system to the land. The massive arms provide structure and durability to the dock, allowing it to rise and lower with changing river levels while maintaining a fixed distance to the shoreline. BoardSafe Docks also manufactured an 80-ft.-long industrial gangway to connect to the floating dock. On the river are (4) floating dock sections, each 20 ft. in length, forming a large 8 ft.-wide by 80 ft.-long floating dock. The structure provides a stable system that will be flood-resistant for decades to come.
Features of the floating dock include a BoardSafe Kayak Clip-a-Launch to allow for easy boarding and exiting, kayak racks that store 3 kayaks per racking system, a protective dock bumper system, and adjustable cleats to tie up to the perimeter of the dock.
What’s unique about the floating dock structure is the two support arms that allow the system to go up and down as the river fluctuates. The arms will provide stability to keep the floating dock system in place during flooding and drought conditions.
