The accessible launch includes a stabilizing cradle for safe and easy access in and out of the kayak, an adaptive kit with a step-down bench, overhead grab bar, hand straps, and pull bars that make it easy for individuals to move from their wheelchair into their kayak.
Megan, a local resident who had been an avid kayaker before an accident left her with limited mobility, was one of the first to use the new kayak launch. As she paddled out onto the river for the first time in years, she felt a wave of emotions wash over her: freedom, empowerment, and a deep connection to nature. "It's incredible to be back on the water," she said with joy in her eyes. "This launch allows me to kayak again, and it’s something I really enjoy!"

Scope of Work on the Monongahela River Wharf Project
The project included
- 100 feet of floating dock installed on the Monongahela River.

- a 30-ft long support arm to temporarily support the dock until piles are installed.
BoardSafe fast-tracked the project timeline for the borough to have it installed in time for Brownsville’s RiverFest on July, 5th, 2024. BoardSafe’s expertise and experience with similar projects allowed us to design, draft, fabricate, and install the project in less than 3 weeks.

Making the Erie Canal More Accessible Throughout New York State
A new effort among the New York Power Authority, New York State Canal Corporation, and Rochester Accessible Adventures, aims to guide communities in creating accessible facilities along the Erie Canal. Anita O’Brien, executive director of RAA, said her group will work with businesses and other entities who wish to make their locations more accessible and remove barriers for individuals with disabilities.

Darien Lakes Enhances Water Access with BoardSafe Kayak Launch

John Snyder, a key figure from NY State Parks involved in the project, expressed his satisfaction with the outcome. Snyder remarked, “The final product has already made a noticeable difference for our visitors. University of Central Florida Still Enjoying BoardSafe Kayak Launch
It’s been over five years since the students at the University of Central Florida received a BoardSafe Adaptive Kayak Launch. Students and park visitors enjoy the accessible launch system on UCF’s campus at the Lake Claire Recreational Area. Using the launch is free for university students. It appears that the universal access launch system is used and enjoyed more now than when it was installed over five years ago.

ADA-Compliant BoardSafe Adaptive Kayak Launch Installed at Grand Marais, MN
Grand Marais, Minnesota, announced the installation of a new BoardSafe ADA Adaptive Kayak Launch at the Grand Marais Recreation Park Boat Landing on Lake Superior. The improvements include adding a kayak and canoe launch and floating dock, stormwater management practices, an aquatic invasive species stall, a walkable breakwater, and the removal of the public works facility building, all supported by their partners from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Grand Marais’ Chamber of Commerce, and the City Council Park Board. These improved amenities will enhance the outdoor experience for all visitors and attract visitors to the park and lake.
The adaptive launch was designed, engineered, and manufactured by BoardSafe Docks and coordinated with Dave Tersteeg, the Recreation Parks Manager, who feels this one-of-a-kind launch will be a game-changer on their lake for paddlers with limited mobility. The accessible project includes

Beaver Creek Flotilla: Building Community and So Much More
The 7th Annual Beaver Creek Kayak Club Flotilla, sponsored by First Bank, was an exceptional day of paddling, camaraderie, and community spirit. Held on Saturday, May 18th, the early morning event saw participants and spectators gather to embrace the adventure awaiting them on the picturesque Beaver Creek. The weather forecast leading up to Saturday’s flotilla appeared uncertain; however, by mid-morning, the skies had cleared, the temperature was comfortable, and just a few clouds hung overhead, providing sufficient cover for an invigorating 6.2-mile paddle.
Paddlers of all ages and skill levels converged at the starting point located at Aubrey’s Launch behind Powell High School. Their colorful kayaks and life vests created a vibrant tapestry along the creek’s edge. The event started with an enthusiastic welcome from Beaver Creek Kayak Club president, Charlie Austin, who expressed gratitude to First Bank for their third consecutive year as title sponsor. “First Bank’s sponsorship has allowed us to make the Flotilla an annual highlight for our community. It’s wonderful to see so many familiar faces in the crowd and new friends coming out for the first time to enjoy Beaver Creek.” Many paddlers raised their hands, acknowledging it was their first time participating in the Flotilla but excited to paddle the creek.
Larsen Jay, Knox County Commissioner, recognized the club for its service to the community and acknowledged Knox County Parks and Recreation for their role in Clearing, Cleaning, and Caring for Beaver Creek. To date, they have removed 2100 tons of debris from the creek, restoring its health, improving water quality, animal and plant life, reducing flooding, and providing a recreational asset for the community.
Krickett Jones was recognized as Jr. Floatmaster for the event. Krickett is a Karns High School student who excels in both academics and athletics, and who was recently awarded the 2024 RSSAA Girls State Wrestling Championship for her weight class.
Jeff Jarnigan kicked off the Flotilla as Floatmaster, announcing that it was a great day to be paddling on the creek! Jeff has served the East Tennessee community for 30 years as the announcer for the University of Tennessee Football, Basketball, and Pride of the Southland Band. He has committed his career to connecting people and was an obvious choice for this year’s Floatmaster.
Following the opening ceremony, the paddlers took to the water, their kayaks gliding smoothly across the creek’s surface. The creek is known for its serene beauty, with the surrounding trees and foliage reflecting vividly in the clear, calm waters. The gentle current ensured that both novices and seasoned kayakers could enjoy the experience without concern. As the Flotilla progressed, the true essence of the event became evident. The Flotilla wasn’t just about paddling—it was about building and strengthening friendships and fostering community. Laughter and conversation filled the air as paddlers stopped to photograph the wildlife and picturesque scenery along the way. It was a reminder of the simple joys and natural beauty the Beaver Creek area offers. As the participants reached the endpoint, the takeout was at Charlie’s Launch, on the BoardSafe Kayak Launch located at Roy Arthur Stormwater Park. There was a palpable sense of achievement and fulfillment among the participants.

Winter activities include tubing, cross-country skiing, ice skating, snowshoeing, ice fishing, and winter hiking. In spring, summer, and fall, a new and inclusive kayak and canoe launch offers universal access and invites everyone’s participation in connecting with the park’s beautiful surroundings. Until recently, individuals with mobility challenges faced obstacles in fully enjoying the park's offerings, particularly water-based activities like kayaking.

Friendship Park Offers Lake Access With BoardSafe Adaptive Kayak Launch
Jefferson County Park Commissioners are excited to bring accessibility to their lake at Friendship Park in Steubenville, Ohio. Friendship Park is a 1320-acre park located right outside the Village of Smithfield. The park has camping, boating, and fishing facilities, and is a popular spot for bird watching, biking, horseback riding, and other outdoor activities.
“We are excited to add this amenity to the park and make the lake more accessible,” said Judy Henthorn, Park Commissioner. “We are already seeing an increase in park attendance from this addition and are pleased the county commissioners saw the importance and potential of this project and helped provide the funding to make it possible.” The new amenity also aligns with their goal of creating more inclusive recreational outlets for people in Jefferson County.
The 89-acre lake provides fishing for bass, bluegill, carp, trout, and catfish. An additional 5 small lakes surround the main lake and camping areas. Nature lovers can enjoy the serene location and its numerous activities.
Adding to the park’s recreational amenities is a BoardSafe Adaptive Kayak Launch that offers people of all abilities an opportunity to get out on the water to paddle and fish.
The universal access launch offers paddlers and fishermen safe and easy access to their vessels when entering and exiting their kayaks and canoes.
Jennifer Simms, Friendship Park’s Paddle Sports Program Coordinator, explained, “It was important to have something adaptive for people with physical limitations. I’m excited about the support from the commissioners and community that made it happen.” Simms saw BoardSafe’s Adaptive Kayak Launch “as an opportunity to introduce the residents of Jefferson County and the surrounding area to the beauty of Friendship Park. She and those in support of the launch understand the importance of including everyone, especially those with mobility limitations.
The scope of the project included:
- (2) 8x16 floating docks.
- (2) 16 ft. kayak launches.
- (1) adaptive kit for adaptive access.
- (1) 20 ft. gangway and chute.
- Bulkhead mounting angle.
- (2) 2’6” x 2’6” x 5’0” precast foundation blocks.
The town announced a ribbon-cutting ceremony to promote its new universal access launch system for Saturday, May 18th. They’re already working on a schedule of future events to be held at the park. The ribbon-cutting ceremony looks like it will be an amazing day of fun activities for the community and includes:
- the ribbon-cutting ceremony beginning at 11 a.m., with festivities through 2 p.m.
- the Coast Guard Flotilla 082-07-02 that will be available from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. for complementary vessel inspections, with a safety class beginning at 10 a.m.
- food provided by Crossroads Christian Church Wintersville, and the Ice Cream Island food truck will be on-site.
- a chance for Park patrons to purchase tickets for $10 each for a chance to win a kayak donated by Friends of Smithfield, with all proceeds benefiting the Paddle Sports Program at the park. The drawing will be held at 2 p.m.
